Celebrating National Pro Bono Week: The Power of Partnership

Happy National Pro Bono Week!  This week (October 22-28) is a time for reflection, celebration, and action.

At the Appleseed Network, we’re especially proud of the deep and expansive pro bono collaborations between law firms and Appleseed centers across the US and Mexico. These partnerships not only amplify our efforts but also embody the spirit of community engagement and social justice that are fundamental to the Appleseed mission.

In honor of National #ProBonoWeek, we’re thrilled to spend this week highlighting some of the pro bono partnerships that have made a difference in the communities we serve.

DLA Piper – The Value of Collaboration

DLA Piper’s Lisa Dewey puts it succinctly: “We are in our communities, we’re of our communities, and it’s important for us to work with nonprofits like Appleseed.”

The firm values its partnership with Appleseed for the expertise, connections, and the meticulous planning that goes into each project. In short, collaboration with Appleseed is not just desirable—it’s “absolutely essential and critical” to the success of their pro bono program.

DC Appleseed & Hogan Lovells – Fighting the HIV Epidemic

In 2003, DC Appleseed began an HIV Project with the support of local funders and the DC government. But it was the pro bono partnership with Hogan Lovells that took it to the next level. The firm helped us issue a groundbreaking report in 2005 which offered an in-depth analysis and actionable recommendations to improve the DC government’s response to the HIV epidemic.

The initiative didn’t stop there. We followed up with nine annual report cards, grading the District’s progress in critical areas like testing and housing. Presented at public events featuring city officials, these report cards served as a catalyst for change, motivating agencies to up their game.

Georgia Appleseed & Goodwin Procter – Advocating for Foster Youth Rights

In a collaboration with Georgia Appleseed, Goodwin Procter sought to create a bill of rights for foster youth in Georgia. This monumental task involved extensive research and consultations with experts.

The outcome? A potential bill that could guarantee foster youth various critical rights, including access to medical services, safe foster homes, and participation in hearings that impact their lives.

Pro bono partnerships are more than just charitable endeavors; they’re a vital engine of systemic change.

At Appleseed, we’re fortunate to work with legal giants who share our passion for social justice and access to justice. The impact of these partnerships extends far beyond the immediate projects, influencing policy, and engendering a culture of community responsibility.

This National #ProBonoWeek, we celebrate the community commitment of law firms and legal professionals and we look forward to connecting with even more attorneys who are passionate about pro bono and justice. Together, let’s sow the seeds for a more equitable and just society!
