New York Appleseed’s Executive Director, Nyah Berg, Appointed to NYC Mayor-Elect’s Education & Youth Transition Committee

New York Appleseed Executive Director Nyah Berg has been appointed to Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s Education & Youth Transition Committee, one of 17 committees tasked with helping the incoming administration prepare to address some of New York City’s most urgent challenges. The committee includes leaders in education, childcare policy, youth services, and community advocacy who will help shape personnel recommendations and inform policy development for the new administration.

Mayor-elect Mamdani’s transition team has brought together more than 400 New Yorkers from across government, academia, nonprofit organizations, labor, and the private sector. These committees reflect the administration’s commitment to confronting the city’s affordability crisis — especially the rising costs of childcare, entrenched inequities in the public school system, and barriers to opportunity that most heavily impact low-income families.

Nyah’s appointment is a recognition of her deep experience advancing educational equity and school integration across New York City. Under her leadership, New York Appleseed has pushed for policies that expand opportunity, dismantle segregation, and build more just and inclusive pathways for the city’s young people. Her voice will help ensure that the next administration centers the needs of students and families who are too often left out of decision-making.

In its reporting on the transition committee, Chalkbeat noted the administration’s emphasis on early childhood education, childcare affordability, and community-driven reform—areas where Nyah’s expertise and New York Appleseed’s advocacy will provide essential insight. Her participation will help the mayor-elect’s team take a thoughtful, equity-focused approach as they identify the personnel and policies that will define the early months of the new administration.

Appleseed centers across the Network work every day to strengthen the systems that shape people’s lives—education, housing, criminal justice, and more. Nyah’s appointment reflects not only her longstanding dedication to equity, but also the impact that Appleseed’s work continues to have in advancing systemic reform for communities across the country.

We’re proud to see her serve in this critical role and look forward to the contributions she’ll make as New York City begins this next chapter.
