DESCRIPTION:Dive back into the critical conversation of school segregation and racial equity with the second installment of Appleseed’s Virtual Roundtable Series. \nThis time\, we’re focusing on the intersection of housing\, land use policies\, and school segregation. We’ll explore how these seemingly disparate elements are interlinked and impact the ongoing battle for racial equity and justice in our schools and communities. \nAfter setting the stage with our June webinar\, “The Road to Integration: School Segregation & the Ongoing Fight for Racial Equity\,” we’re back to dig even deeper. This upcoming webinar is organized by NY Appleseed and Texas Appleseed\, who are at the forefront of the contemporary struggle for integrated schools and communities. \nRegister Now \n\nOur Speakers\nProfessor R. L’Heureux Lewis McCoy is a sociologist whose scholarship and activism centers issues of race\, education\, and opportunity. He is an Associate Professor at New York University in the Sociology of Education program in the School of Culture\, Education and Human Development.. \nIn the area of education\, he critically engages how educational resources and opportunities are hoarded. He is the author of “Inequality in the Promised Land\,” which tackled how inequality persisted in an “integrated” school and suburban community. His larger research interests include race and racism\, gender justice\, and community mobilization. He has lectured widely and has been a featured expert on the role of race in the contemporary political landscape\, suburban and urban regional issues\, as well as social justice. \n  \nCashauna Hill was recently named the Executive Director of the Redress Movement\, after previously serving as Executive Director of the Louisiana Fair Housing Action Center (formerly known as the Greater New Orleans Fair Housing Action Center). Through educating\, organizing\, and shifting the narrative\, The Redress Movement supports local communities in promoting and securing remedies for the intentionally discriminatory policies that segregate neighborhoods across the country. \nAt the Louisiana Fair Housing Action Center\, Ms. Hill led a team working holistically to end discriminatory housing policies and practices through litigation\, policy advocacy\, community-based educational offerings\, and other direct services to community members. Her work as Executive Director included leading the community engagement process for the City of New Orleans’ 2016 Assessment of Fair Housing plan – the first in the nation submitted under a 2015 rule requiring state and local governments to identify and address barriers to fair housing choice. Ms. Hill has written extensively about housing segregation and civil rights and has testified before the United States Congress as a fair housing expert. She is a graduate of Spelman College and Tulane Law School. \n\nWhat To Expect\nExpect a rich\, nuanced discussion that goes beyond the textbook definitions and dives into the real-world implications of housing and land use policies on school segregation.
