2011 Accomplishments

This year, we continued to develop and nurture a network of 17 robust justice-based organizations in the US and Mexico. Among our many accomplishments, we . . .

Financial Access

•Built bridges between numerous financial institutions and unbanked immigrant populations to provide secure services and help build assets.

•Successfully advocated for federal legislation providing consumer protections for persons sending money abroad.

•Provided a thoughtful voice for fairness in the regulatory process on banking and finance issues.

Immigration

•Documented systematic unfairness, skewed priorities and inefficiencies in the immigrant justice system.

•Powerfully advocated for Mexican children who are not receiving the protections to which they are entitled under US law.

Heir Property

•Helped secure model legislation to solve the largest cause of African-American land loss in the south: heir property.

Due Process and Consumer Debt

•Piloted volunteer lawyer-for-a-day programs in New York to help those defending themselves in consumer debt cases.

Education

•Devised an assessment tool that can reveal unfair allocation of resources within a school district, in order to close the opportunity gap in education.

•Empowered communities and challenged educators to better engage parents in high-poverty schools.

Elder Justice

•Elevated the issue of elder abuse on the national agenda for justice.

Pro bono Broker

•Matched attorneys for nonprofit allies to help preserve gun control laws and make voting easy for college students.
